Modest Fashion, Fast Fashion and Responsibility: What if we finally rediscovered the meaning of modesty?

Modest Fashion, Fast Fashion et Responsabilité : Et si on reprenait enfin le sens de la pudeur ? - Seni'Stuff

I. Modest fashion: a beautiful identity, but one that has become a two-speed market

Every year, when Black Friday arrives, a frenzy takes hold: prices plummet, shopping carts overflow, and promotions follow one after another. We, Muslim women, find ourselves at the heart of a silent contradiction: wanting to be modest, elegant, and true to our values, while simultaneously being swept up in a constantly accelerating consumer system.

Modest fashion has become a rich universe: impeccable abayas, flowing silhouettes, satin scarves, neutral tones, respectful lengths… All of this carries an identity, a spirituality, a sense of pride. But this beauty also attracts the attention of fast-fashion giants. Shein sold more than 14,000 long skirts in 2024. Boohoo sells abayas for €9. Zara is rolling out “Modest” lines in several Gulf countries. This aesthetic, meant to embody modesty, has become an ultra-profitable niche for systems that respect neither workers nor the planet.

At a time when 92 million tons of textiles are thrown away each year and a truckload of clothing is burned or buried every second, modest fashion sometimes produces as much waste as the rest of the industry, mainly because of the ubiquitous polyester in “modest” pieces.

But beyond the figures, another, more delicate question must be asked: what really remains of modesty when our choices follow the rhythm of fast fashion?

II. Modesty: much more than a style of dress, a forgotten ethic

This reminder is essential: in Islam, modesty is not just about clothing. It is an attitude, a responsibility, an ethical principle. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Modesty is part of faith.” (Bukhari & Muslim). Therefore, the word "mastur" cannot be reduced to loose clothing or a headscarf.

Today, a garment simply needs to be long, wide, or "Gulf-inspired" to be sold as "modest." Yet, Islam evokes another dimension, often erased in modern modest fashion.

Allah says: “Eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who transgress.” (Quran 7:31). This verse, which scholars apply to all forms of consumption, reminds us of a simple principle: modesty begins where excess ends .

And let's be clear: some modest fashion brands fully participate in the fast fashion model , but with a "mastour" veneer. Endless drops, weekly collections, excessive use of polyester, 30-piece hauls… Mini-skirts have been replaced with long skirts, but the same wasteful system remains.

Creating modest clothing is not difficult.
Creating modest and responsible clothing is a commitment.

Allah says:
“Do not sow corruption on the earth after it has been reformed.”
(Surah 7:56). Mass production of polyester, disposal, overconsumption, exploitation, pollution… How can this be compatible with spiritual modesty?

Being modest isn't just about covering your body. It's also about protecting creation , respecting the Earth, and rejecting textile waste. It's about consuming consciously, moderately, and responsibly.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has prescribed excellence in all things.” (Muslim)
Excellence, in our context, means choosing better, producing better, and consuming better.

III. Returning to meaning: consuming less, consuming better, consuming with faith

Returning to modest fashion aligned with our values means learning to choose. Choosing sustainable pieces, materials that respect our skin and the Earth, creations made with intention rather than mass-produced. Choosing pieces that we will love for a long time, wear for a long time, and respect for a long time.

It's about supporting small, independent designers who produce slowly, not those who copy the fast fashion model. It's about preferring timeless pieces to disposable ones. It's about accepting that "mastour" doesn't mean "bought quickly," but "chosen with faith."

At Seni'Stuff, that's why there's no Black Friday. No rush to buy. No pressure. No 80% off. Just pieces designed to last, created with intention, respect, and responsibility. Because every creation leaves a mark on Earth, and I want that mark to be light, beautiful, and sincere.

Modest fashion must once again become a spiritual space, not just an aesthetic one. A space where one embodies modesty, but also awareness, moderation, gratitude, and responsibility.

Modesty is not just about what covers your body.
Modesty is the way you walk in this world.
And choosing consciously... is already a form of worship.
